THE MAJOR
Here
is the complete set of requirements:
*HISTORY
201-1,2
*EUROPEAN STUDIES 301-1,2,3, (=Major Seminar)
*6 additional courses dealing with Europe, at least 4 at the 300
level
*2 300-level language/literature courses taught in a continental
European language (may be taken during a period of study abroad)
* EUROPEAN STUDIES 390-1,2,3 (=Senior Thesis Seminar)
Sophomores
qualify for the major seminars. Juniors who are going abroad without
having taken the major seminar sequence would be expected to take
it on their return.
This year's 301 sequence is devoted to the theme of "Magic, Medicine, Science and Religion." The fall quarter course was taught by Daniel Garrison of the Classics Department and examined "Early European Medicine." This was followed in the winter by a course taught by Yohanan Petrovsky-Shtern of the History Department on "The Kabbalah." The spring quarter course will be
entitled "The Sense of an Ending: Cemeteries, Western Culture, and the Modern Imagination since 1800" and will be taught by
Elisa Martí-López of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.
The 2008-2009 sequence will begin in fall quarter with European Studies 301-1, "Europe After the Black Death
," taught by Nicholas Baker of the History Department.
